Who We Are

The Village Nursing & Care Home @ Murton is situated in pleasant grounds in an off-road location in a quiet area of Murton. All accommodation is contained over a single storey, making access to every room and facility readily accessible. We have some rooms with en-suite facilities and a double room for couples. There are several lounges, offering quiet areas where you can sit and relax, two main dining areas and bathrooms adapted with specialist equipment.  The grounds are spacious, offering restful areas to relax in.


For those who may need it there is a regular bus service to the main village of Murton and Seaham, Sunderland and Durham. The bus stops are close to the shop near the entrance to the grounds.

Staff at the Home

The Village Nursing & Care Home @ Murton has a variety of well trained and caring staff. We pride ourselves in the personalised care we give you and hope you feel you can talk to us and that you feel comfortable in our care. We would like to share in your happy times, and we would like to help with any concerns or worries you may have as well.

​

The Manager is responsible for the daily running of the Home. The Manager also manages the staff and deals with the financial and administrative running of the Home.


We also have a Deputy Manager who assists the Manager in the efficient running of the home and who leads in staff supervision and organisation and oversees the people who use our services welfare.

​

There is always a Registered Nurse on duty in the Home 24 hours a day to ensure that an excellent level of care is available for you which is always maintained. The nurses who work here are trained in either general nursing or mental health.

​

The Care staff are all qualified to or working towards NVQ level 2/diploma standard and many of the carers have opted to extend their qualifications to NVQ/diploma level 3. All care and Nursing Staff have undertaken specialised training in Risk Assessment, Behaviours that May Challenge some People, as well as Dementia and Person-Centred Care Planning. They also receive statutory training regularly and training plans are in place to ensure they retain their skills.

We have a team of laundry staff who ensure that your clothes, bedding, towels etc are always fresh and clean and pressed. The laundry service look after several people’s garments so it is advisable to label your clothing. The housekeeping staff will clean your room and surrounding environment.

You may if you wish, bring in small pieces of furniture and room decorations to personalise your room, but please see the Manager first. There are strict regulations of what may be brought into the Home, from a health and safety and fire perspective but we will advise you accordingly.

​

We have an activities co-ordinator in the Home who arrange daily activities including bingo, coffee mornings/afternoons, board games, reminiscence, sing-a-longs, karaoke, entertainers and many more.

​

There are also trips out to various venues and places of interest. Also the co-ordinator will spend some one-to-one time with you if that’s what you prefer.

​

We have a dedicated team of kitchen staff. They will ensure that your meals are fresh, timely and nutritious.

​

We have a handyman within the Home. He will ensure that all minor repairs are dealt with and that the Home is always freshly decorated and tidy.

Lifestyle in the home

The home has very few rules and regulations. Visitors are welcome at any time during the day. The atmosphere is very relaxed and you may go about your life as you wish. You may entertain guests in your room or in any of our lounges. You may leave the Home at any time but please tell the person in charge so we are aware of your whereabouts and to allow time to prepare any medicines that you may need to take with you.


A No Smoking policy is in operation within the Home and smoking is only allowed in designated smoking areas. The Manager or Deputy Manager will advise you where the designated areas are.


You may arrange your room as you wish and bring in any items of personal furnishings, decorations, music, television etc. as long as they are safe. Please see the Manager or the Deputy Manager to ensure the items are suitable for your allocated room. All used electrical items must be P.A.T. tested before use in your room.  We will arrange this testing for you.

Facilities

All rooms are individually decorated and well maintained with a bed, bedside cabinet, wardrobe, washbasin and easy chair. Some rooms have a toilet en suite or even a shower. All rooms have a TV point and electric sockets. Each has its own lockable door and a lockable drawer or cupboard in the room. The person in charge does have a master key for an emergency. All rooms have smoke detectors that are checked regularly. The window may be opened but regulations state they must have restrictions on them for safety.


The Home has a variety of facilities to help with your care and to make life comfortable for you.

There is a mobile hoist for easy transfer into wheelchairs so that you can access other areas of the home if you wish.  All corridors are wide enough for wheelchairs to pass easily through and have handrails on both sides. All toilets and bathrooms are easy enough for wheelchairs and carers to assist you if required.

We have variety of aids and appliances to make life easier for you, such as specialist cutlery, specialist mattresses for those who may need them and bath hoists.

You may have a personal telephone in your room but you will be expected to purchase and pay for this and its usage yourself.

If there is anything not covered please do ask the manager who will be able to help you.

Dining Arrangements and Menus

There is a four-week rotating menu, one displayed in each dining room. The menus are varied and nutritious and contain fresh seasonal vegetables. There is a choice of food for each meal time and carers will ask each Individual daily for their own personal preferences. If there is nothing on the menu to suit that day, please ask and we will try to arrange an alternative.


For breakfast there is a choice of cereals and cooked breakfast which varies each day in content. Service starts around 8.00 am but is flexible throughout the morning.

The main meal of the day is served at 12.00. There is always a choice of two meals, one is usually a traditional cooked meal with meat and seasonal vegetables. Meals are followed by a pudding. Alternatives are dependent on the day and they include omelettes, baked potatoes with fillings or sandwiches. There is also the option of homemade soup, beans or spaghetti on toast etc.


Tea is served at 4:00p.m. and is a choice of menu with foods such as broth or homemade soup, beans or spaghetti on toast, pie and chips, sausage rolls, jacket potatoes with fillings, egg dishes, tea cakes, salads, sandwiches etc.


In the morning and afternoon there are beverages and snacks available from the trolley. Supper service starts at 6:30p.m. and continues until about 10:00p.m. Drinks, snacks and biscuits are available.  


Drinks and snacks are available throughout the day and night. Please ask a carer for these.

On Christmas day there is a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and drinks. Later there will be a buffet tea. At all other special occasions, meals reflect the event and family and friends are welcome to attend.


Fees include room, all care, laundry, cleaning services and meals. Some extras may be wanted according to individual needs and require you to pay separately.

Social Activities

The Home has organised many events for everyone to join in and enjoy. If you do not wish to join in there is no pressure and it is entirely your choice. Staff will also sit and chat and mix with residents on a one to one basis if you prefer this. Community links continue with visitors from the local area popping into the Home to see friends and relatives.

We have a dedicated activities co-ordinator who makes sure that there is always some activity in the Home that you can get involved in if you want to. Feel free to join in with any activity that you want to but if you don’t wish to join in then you will not be pressured to do so.
